Today was a great day! Math 7: We played some Kahoot! Students competed in the completion of algebraic equation using Kahoot. Disappeared: We discussed the previous day's questions about the story. I don't think that students put in quite as much as they could have into this in some cases so I will be taking in their responses on Monday. Guest Speaker: We had a guest speaker about sexual health education who addressed a number of issues. Parents and students, I urge you to have these difficult and challenging conversations and will also be creating an opportunity for students to anonymously pose questions in the classroom as I understand this can be a very challenging topic to discuss openly. Sailboat Challenge: TEST DAY FINALLY ARRIVED!!!! With the help of the students, we created a testing ground that proved to be my design challenge. Cardboard and water are not generally a match one looks to for structural integrity, however, we pulled it off. Competition was fierce between the students as they willed their boats towards the finish line. See the slideshow below to check out our competitors. Math: we continued our exploration of equations and revisited the use of positive and negative tiles.
I had a TOC in the morning to attend a meeting.
Afternoon was focused on grade 7 meeting with their Grade 8 buddies. No other info today :) Math 7: Pg. 225 Q 9-11
Math 6: None Disappeared: We worked our way through the longest chapter in the book. Emiliano finally meets Mr. Esmeralda, the father of Perla Rubi. “I don’t need to know the details. All I want to do is tell you that … growing up means, unfortunately, expanding our views of what weconsider good and bad” (94). Choose 2 of the 4 questions and answer them in 3-5 sentences each. Question 1: Mr. Esmeralda suggests that the only way to prosper in Mexico is to get “dirty”. He infers that it is possible to “control the degree of dirt” one becomes involves in (93). Do you think maintaining control is a sustainable possibility? Explain your answer. Question 2: Mr. Esmeralda describes the Juàrez as being a “spiderweb.” Visualize the complex connectivity of a spiderweb. Consider that the purpose for a spider to create a web is to trap and kill insects. Explore the spider’s intent to build as web as serving as a metaphor for a money-rich life in Mexico. Describe this. Question 3: Is it possible to be justify engaging in “bad” practices for good reasons? How so? Question 4: Mr. Esmeralda identifies with Emiliano’s life of hard-work, diligence, and care for his family. And yet, for him, being a “good, conscientious, clean lawyer” was not enough. To truly prosper, he found that he needed to become “part of this city, such as it is” (92). Discuss what the phrase “such as it is” means. Socials: Students used information to begin to understand indicators for quality of life and how this information is used to rank countries. Students began a comparative analysis of Angola, Afganistan, Peru, Canada, Poland and Vietnam. Today's Puzzle: My apologies for the absence in posting the last couple of school days.
Math 7: We are starting a new unit looking at algebraic equations. Much of this will be review and building upon work done earlier work. Pg. 224 Q. 3-7 Students received their unit tests and should be getting them initialled. Math 6: Pg. 228 Q. 11, 12, 13 Disappeared: We discussed the journeys that our protagonists have been on thus far and how this fits in with other analytical frames that we have previously used in understanding stories. Socials Studies: Self-Assessments in Social Studies competencies are to be discussed and initialled by parents. We started with the question "Should Quality of Life be the Same for Everyone?" From here we began to examine what was meant by "Quality of Life" and considered ways in which we might measure the quality of life of people around the world. Puzzle: See below Math 7: Test Today - No Homework
Math 6: No homework PE: We continued to do Fitness with the Cha Cha Slide Challenge and the Thunderstruck Burpee Challenge. Art: Students are nearing completion of their work on their "Mind my Art" Projects. Socials: Students worked in groups to brainstorm and note possible answers for the questions included in the images below. We are continuing to explore issues of inequality and currently we are focused on the aspects of urbanization and migration. Rough draft of responses will be due on Friday. Dance Festival: Light Jeans and a white t-shirt for tomorrow please. Math 7: Practice Test is to be handed in tomorrow.

Trivia Question: A lady walks into a store and steals a $100 bill from the register without the owner's knowledge. She comes back 5 minutes later and buys $70 worth of goods with the $100 bill. Unit Test Wed Science: Lab Final draft is due Friday Language Arts: "The Sniper" letter final draft is due Friday. Disappeared: Write 3-5 sentences In the story, Emiliano visits the house of Javier to pick of the pinatas. We see an accurate description of the poverty that many families in Mexico face. One of the girls, Marta does not go to school and the bottles of medication indicate that at least in part, this is due to her health. In Canada, every child is entitled to an education regardless of their health or financial. In Mexico, even public education costs money that some people can't afford. Thinking about social studies and inequality, how would not being able to go to school impact the level of inequality in a country? Math 7: Pg 207 Q 1,4-6, 8-13
There will be a unit test on Wednesday. Math 6: MMS Pg 220-221 Q 1-10 due Monday Science: Lab questions are due Monday - rough draft only. We will discuss these. Be prepared to add to your answers. Remember, Science is about the process and showing what you learned is more important than being right! See image of questions below. Careers: We looked at the application forms and did an exercise in superficiality as the students determined which applications they would take a longer look at simply on appearance. The point was to demonstrate just how important first impressions are, particularly when you aren't there to make them. Students, ask your parents about their first jobs and if they remember the interview. Disappeared: March 24th 11:13am - Sara At this point in the novel, Sara is informed by the Jaqueros (Hackeros) that they have found out two important pieces of information. The first is that the person who sent the threat wasn't concerned about them finding out that they represented a large, criminal organization. Second, this organization has previously been linked with the State Police. Knowing that there are such close links between the cartels and the State Police, do you think this would change the way that you feel about whether or not you should look for Linda and do you think there is an opportunity to find justice in this situation? Explain your reasoning. |
