https://tinyurl.com/y35oalcq To start our day, the class had the opportunity to work with Gord Dick, a local indigenous artist from the Squamish Nation who is developing, in collaboration with students, a new logo for the school. Today, our students were working on a guiding drawing of a Thunderbird. They will doing an even more challenging piece tomorrow. Students worked on their peer editing in Language Arts on their favourite activity paragraph. And later on had the opportunity to work on their skits for their Rats of NYMH interviews. I also had a chance to take a look at some of the great work they are doing in Art with Ms. Phillips. Some fantastic work is happening there. Yesterday and today, two of our students presented on the Climate Strike that is happening this Friday. They have appealed to students to join them on Friday. In a message to teachers, Superintendent Mark Pearmain wrote: Global School Climate Strikes Global School Climate Strikes are planned for September 27, 2019, in downtown Vancouver. The North Vancouver School District is committed to sustainability and actively embeds sustainability initiatives within all areas of the organization, including student learning. We have a strong Sustainability Strategy and have goals targeted at sustainability within our 10-Year Strategic Plan and 3-Year Operating Plan. We cannot excuse students from school to attend an event without proper supervision. However, some teachers may choose to follow our field trip processes to attend the Global School Climate Strikes. As per regular school procedures, parents may also excuse their children from class for any reason they deem appropriate, including to attend these events. School will be in session on September 27, 2019. While there was not time to plan a field trip, I have been speaking to both classes about advocacy, both for self and issues as part of our unit on government in the lead up to the election. Lastly, the students giving he presentation have asked me to share the following video. Question: In 2-4 sentences, answer the following question: What is friendship? After this, students wrote in their journals about their thoughts on the impact that Terry has had on people around the world. Design Challenge: Remember, research for this DC is due Monday. Have a great weekend! No question. LA: Students continued to develop their topic sentences and also looked at supporting their topic sentences in a variety of ways. Students need to create 4 points to support their topic sentence and 2 points to support it as well.
There will be a mini-quiz on the sections 1-8 sheets Synonyms, Antonyms, etc. on Friday. Math: Students completed a series of problems on algebraic expressions. There will be a quiz on Thursday. Science: We looked at the causes of variation within a species. Students will have hand cramps from the copious notes they were forced to take :) They will need to review the handout with the notes and read through the other handout provided for Thursday. There may be a small quiz on the reading. Question: In 4-5 sentences, answer the following question; Can kindness change the world? LA: We looked at the beginning of writing a paragraph on a personal activity we enjoy. The first piece of this is picking the topic and then identifying the area of that topic we want to explore, the controlling idea. Students will then need to create a Topic Sentence that will be shared with others tomorrow. Math: We looked at converting language into algebraic expressions and vice-versa. The worksheet is homework if it was not completed. Careers: We looked at the rights embedded in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. LA: we went over together most of the Language Arts work that we have done to this point. Students did a great job of identifying words that they were uncertain of when it came to prefixes and suffixes.
Math: We began looking at Algebraic expressions and defining and applying numerical coefficients, variables and constants. No homework. I had intended to have a French class today but the class was doing a great job with the Math and I felt that it was time better spent reinforcing the concepts and giving them time to complete and check their work. Design Challenge: Students were put into groups and provided with the criteria sheet for the Caveman Catapult design. Critical Thinking: we discussed spheres of influence, epistemology (theories of knowledge) and metacognitive thinking (thinking about thinking). As part of this, we considered the Lunar Effect, the phenomenon that people are influenced by a full moon. We discussed that several peer-reviewed studies have been published on the behaviour of people, more accidents and arrests happen on the evening of a full-moon, and that the moon does have a significant effect on our planet (ie. tides). However, there has yet to be any concrete evidence as to why people's behaviour changes on a full moon. So...... Question: In 3-4 sentences, state whether or not you think the lunar effect is a real or imaginary phenomenon between a full moon and the behavior of humans. Justify your opinion. LA: Students peer-reviewed their work from previous days.

The students will be building this initial vocabulary to help build posters that they will be able to use in the classroom that they can reference.
