Class,
Today was a challenging day. We had a guest in our room who is aspiring to be a teacher and unfortunately, she witnessed what was probably the poorest behaviour I have seen from my class this year. It was a constant struggle to have everyone focus and follow instructions. This happened despite the fact that we were reading about cell phones at school and completing a chemistry experiment. Things I thought you would be excited to do. While I could understand the interest and excitement bubbling over a discussion regarding cell phones for students, there was no excuse for the utter collapse that happened during chemistry in people's ability to listen and follow instructions. Only one group was able to bring the experiment to completion. What is most frustrating is that you are all incredibly capable students who have shown me that you are so much better than you were today. Our guest will be returning tomorrow. I hope to see the class that I have become accustomed to seeing, tomorrow. Goals: Will be going home this Friday. Please looks for them with your child.
Grade 6s: I am needing your Outdoor School Forms ASAP. Parents, please take care of ODS fees when you are able. Math 7: We are looking at converting decimals to fractions and vice-versa. Pg. 88 Q 2, 4-10 are due tomorrow. Completing your homework means marking it when it is done. Language Arts: We continue to look at how to build persuasive paragraphs. Socials: Students had some time to do some research on Otzi. Question: Why do we judge ourselves by our intentions but judge others by their actions? Stretch: Two more outings by two solid groups. Thanks!
Math 7: We started looking at fractions, decimals and percents. Students need to complete pg. 88, Q. 1&3 Art: Students are working on their silhouette art using cold colours and black foreground. Language Arts: We discussed the article and some of the language that was used to paint a picture of the issue. The students did an excellent job of decoding some of the language on what is a very difficult skill to master. Science: We started our unit on Chemistry and did our first mini-experiment. Ask your kids about molecules in water and what those molecules want to do.....better yet, ask them to show you! Question 1: we saw the green food colouring spread throughout the glass after a while but mostly sink to the bottom at the beginning. When we arrive at school tomorrow, will the green resettle at the bottom or will the glass be totally green or will something else happen? Question 2: What two questions would you ask to get the most information about who a person truly is? Bionic: Mira seems to be finding some new found fame through the accident and her band. Do you think that she end up being the face Snap Girl cosmetics again?
Math 7: Assignments are due tomorrow. Language Arts: Students are reading two very different articles regarding the events that have been taking place at the world's largest border crossing at Tijuana-San Diego. Students are to read the articles and identify 5 times in each article where language has been used purposefully to try and persuade the reader and describe the emotion that is trying to be evoked or the meaning behind the words. Parents, please feel free to read an help them out on this one as it does require some higher level thinking and analysis. Coding: I am very impressed by the work being done by the class with their work on Scratch. Photos: We are looking for photos of child with dad as part of the Christmas concert. These may be recent or from younger days. Please email images to me at [email protected] Question: If you could meet anyone, either in the history or present day, who would it be and why? Thanks to everyone for their great input over the last few days during the conferences. I really enjoy getting to meet the parents of my students and I encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. And, if you would like to come and visit and spend some time in the class, please let me know and we can work out a time. Today we started off with a conversation regarding the current referendum. This is actually a topic I have studied extensively during my undergrad degree in Political Science. I have told the students that they are to ask parents if they have filled out an mailed in their vote. Regardless of what you decide, I would encourage all to participate if they are able to do so. Math 7: Students are working on their assignments and we managed to tackle some of the problems that people were having with their 5x5 Magic Square, some students may opt to do a 4x4 or have only one line not working in their 5x5. There will also be a computation test with word problems on Monday. Assignments are due Tuesday. Socials: We are studying the mystery of Otzi the Iceman. Students have read an article and watched a documentary (see below). Students will be writing a paragraph that states their opinion on the motive/cause of his death. I have brought a couple of books into the classroom that I would encourage students to look through to help them build their case. Additionally, students should check out the website on Otzi at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. Click here for the website. Stretch: We had two more excellent presentations for stretch today. Thanks! Socials: Gallery walk on our Mystery Artifacts was great! Well done everyone! Question: Would things get better or worse if humans focused on what was going well rather than what’s going wrong? So this is what happens when some of the kids take over my board at lunch :)

Science: Students wrote their final test for our unit on Force and Motion and we will be beginning Chemistry next week.
