Hey Everybody! We survived!
Of course, this was only the first round..... Anyways, we have made it to the break and we are, for the most part, still in one piece. Though I worry for Migit and the fact that she keeps taking such a beating in PE. Please, stop hitting her with the balls. Secret Santa was a lot of fun today and I think that everybody got something they wanted and/or liked. I have been taking photos throughout the year so far but have been less good at posting them. I will be making an effort to post some of my favourites over the break (this has nothing to do with freeing up some room on my phone, I swear). So, look for your photo coming soon. In all honesty though, I have had a lot of fun with you all so far and I look forward to the next term. You are a great class and I wouldn't change any of you for anyone.....except maybe Lollimoose cause she is always talking and Gubby cause she is so mean to everyone. Just kidding! Have a great break! Merry Christmas! یلداتون مبارک! Happy Hanukah! And happy anything else I might have missed. I look forward to seeing you and hearing all about your break when we get back. Rest up! No homework! Should I post a question.......hmmmm......sure, why not? Should "ship" names be banned? Yes or No. If yes, is this a violation of freedom of expression? If no, what about if the person being called the "ship" name doesn't like it?

****PARENTS & STUDENTS****: On Friday we will be having a small party to celebrate the break. We will be watching a movie and I will provide popcorn. People are welcome to bring some things to share with the class if they would like.
Additionally, students unanimously voted to have a "Secret Santa" on Friday as well. I have asked for them to have their gifts in tomorrow to help prevent a scenario in which someone ends up without a gift. They should all be aware of who they are providing a gift for but in the event that they have forgotten, please email me this evening and I will respond as quickly as possible. Math 7: Test tomorrow Science: Test tomorrow LA: Final Drafts are due Friday I made a syrup last week and some of the students saw the bottle and were asking me about it so....here are the directions for making a Blueberry-Basil Simple Syrup:
Ingredients 1.5 cups of water 3 cups sugar 1 pint blueberries 10-15 basil leaves Warm the water on the stove at medium heat and add the sugar. Stir until fully dissolved. Add the blueberries and basil leaves. Wait until mixture is bubbling for 30 seconds to a minute. Lower heat, cover and let the mixture simmer for 8-10 minutes. Strain the mixture into a large bowl, crushing the blueberries to extract as much juice as possible. Strain again through a fine strainer to remove particles. Bottle and allow to cool before putting it in the fridge. It should keep for at least a month. Mix with some water or soda water to have a delicious and refreshing drink. You can do this with many different ingredients, try swapping the blueberries for sliced strawberries and the basil for mint. You can also let this thicken a bit more and leave the fruit in the mixture and serve it on top of ice cream, cheesecake or pancakes. Enjoy! Language Arts: We reviewed some of the styles of writing. Remember, second drafts must be done and printed out tomorrow....you may have to write them out by hand as the printer hasn't been working. You will be reading them out tomorrow.
Math: We did some review for the test on Thursday. Do the sections that you have struggled with so far and try not to use your calculator. Art: We started a new art project using paper circuits. Science meets art is always fun! Socials: students received their Otzi paragraphs. We have some work to do. Coding/Design Challenge: Two days til coding must be done....I think we are almost there. Question: Based off of the definition that we created and understood of "ethical" earlier in the year, do you think that it is ethical for a company to make a game that encourages kids to "kill" each other? Language Arts: Students received some info about their final assignment on Bionic. I have printed these off and you will have hard copies tomorrow but, if you want a sneak peak, you can check out the file here. Math 7: There is a test on Thursday. Practice without your calculators! Pg. 115-116 Q 1-6. We are working on calculating percentages. Science: We did some review for the Science Test that will be on Thursday. There will be 10 Multiple Choice Questions, 5 fill in the blanks and 10 short answer questions. These are all based in the labs and handouts that we have been doing. French: Article Sheet Coding: Students were working on their coding projects. While they were supposed to be due today, a number of students communicated that they were struggling with one aspect or another and requested more time. Our showcase will now happen on Thursday. Question: Answer the following in 3-5 sentences: Why, in your opinion, is Fortnite so addictive and popular? ********** UPDATE/REMINDER**************** Secret Santa gifts must be here on Thursday!!!!!! Language Arts: Students need to work on the opposite position to the paragraphs they have written. First drafts are due Thursday. Science: Today we conducted some demonstrations. We discussed that air is matter and that because of this, air has mass (weight) and takes up space. Science Questions: due Thursday. Answer the following on a separate sheet. 1. Draw circles to represent the molecules in a solid, liquid, and gas. Because all three different substances are all at the same temperature, draw the same number of motion lines near the circles for each substance. Under each box, write about the arrangement and motion of the molecules and the attractions the molecules have for one another. 2. Imagine that you work at a party store during the summer. You are going to ride home with the owner of the store whose car has been sitting in the hot sun all day long. The owner tells you that you can take home a big bunch of balloons, but advises you to not blow the balloons up all of the way. Explain why the owner’s advice is wise. Be sure to discuss how heating affects the motion of the molecules in a gas.
Question: Today we put the balloon over the mouth of the flask and it immediately blew up the balloon. By the time we left for the day, it was completely sucked inside the bottle. What do you predict will happen by the time we arrive tomorrow? Bionic: Romance rekindled or a cyborg, toying with a weak and vulnerable Niles?
There was no math today. Students are doing some excellent work with their cold colour background and silhouettes. Coding: We are down to crunch time on these as there is only one week to finish them up before we present them to Ms. Knibbs class. Design Challenge: We will begin prototyping on Friday. Be prepared with the material you think you will need! Question: Fate is the idea that things happen for a reason. In the book today, Mira asked if running into Niles on the train was fate. Likely many of you have had this experience where something happens in a peculiar way that makes you think that fate made something occur. Free will is the idea that we are in charge of the decisions that we make in life. So, here is the question: Does fate exist? If so, do we have free will? Science Lab is due Monday
LA Paragraph Final Draft is due Tuesday Socials Paragraph Final Draft is due Tuesday Design Challenge: we have formed groups and will be developing (and in some cases may have already started) our possible solutions. Math 7: Pg. 106 Q. 2-7 Question: What activities cause you to feel like you are living life to the fullest? Results can be found for the group with the cold water in the slides Results for the found for the group with the hot water below. Math 7: Pg. 106 Q. 2-7 Hi Parents,
Yesterday we had a false alarm go off with the installation of a new PA system. The alarm was not a familiar one and so, being overly cautious, I asked the class to go into lock down procedure. I am happy to report that the students did an excellent job, doing exactly what would be expected of them. Within 30 seconds, there was an announcement from the office that the alarm was false. I didn't think much of it at the time but in talking with the students today, I realized that some of them found it rather unsettling. While I was wrong about this being a lockdown, I would much rather put the class into lockdown and be wrong than not do it and be wrong. I apologize if you or your child was upset by yesterday's event and hope, most sincerely, that we never need to be in another situation like this again. Thanks, Mr. Western |
